Crystal Morphology of Luminescent Microcrystals Based on Eu(III) Coordination Polymers Changed by Surfactant Solutions.

Enokido Masaki M, Wang Mengfei M, Kitagawa Yuichi Y, Hasegawa Yasuchika Y

The morphological control of Eu(III) coordination polymers with intermolecular interactions between polymer chains was demonstrated with surfactants as molecular modulators. [Eu(hfa)3(m-dpb)]n coordination polymers (hfa; hexafluoroacetylacetonate, m-dpb; 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)benzene) showed crystal growth in CTAB/SDS solution (CTAB, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide; SDS, sodium dodecyl sulfate). The crystal morphology of [Eu(hfa)3(m-dpb)]n was changed under the synthetic conditions with various types of cationic surfactants (N+(CH3)3CnH2n+1; n = 8, 12, and 16). The Eu(III) coordination polymer crystals were observed as plates and slender rod shapes. Their crystal morphologies suggest that the crystal growth along the chain growth direction is faster than that along the chain stacking direction.

Purification of Bioactive Natural Antibodies to PD-1 Known as Regulatory Rheumatoid Factor from Human Blood Plasma.

Menshikova Daria D, Terentiev Alexey A, Ivanov Pavel P, Cherednichenko Alexandr A et al.

Regulatory rheumatoid factor (regRF) is a recently discovered population of natural anti-idiotypic antibodies carrying a shared paratope specific to the PD-1 molecule. Normally, regRF exerts a cytotoxic effect on PD-1-expressing T lymphocytes, including autoreactive ones, thereby controlling their expansion. The specificity for PD-1 indentifies regRF as a promising therapeutic agent for suppressing autoimmune reactions via the PD-1 pathway. The aim of this study was to develop gentle methods for regRF isolation from healthy blood plasma, which would preserve the bioactivity of regRF. Ammonium sulfate precipitation was used for crude regRF purification. A search for suitable affinity sorbents was carried out. The purified regRF was tested for its bioactivity. Ammonium sulfate precipitation at 35% saturation, followed by extraction with 28% saturated ammonium sulfate solution, allowed the separation of regRF from a portion of non-target IgG and high-molecular-weight fibrinogen. RegRF showed high affinity for Cibacron Blue and no binding to Protein A. Sequential affinity chromatography on immobilized Cibacron Blue and Protein A enabled the purification of regRF from non-target immunoglobulins and low-molecular-weight fibrinogen. The purified regRF samples showed binding to PD-1 and reduced the PD-1+CD4+ T lymphocyte count in vitro. Thus, we have identified sorbents and conditions for the purification of biologically active regRF.

Recent advances in structural and interfacial chemistry of Prussian blue analogues for sodium-ion batteries.

Jang Seunghye S, Kim Yuseul Y, Jo Changshin C

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have emerged as leading cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries owing to their open framework structure, low cost, and scalable synthesis. While early studies primarily focused on compositional and morphological optimization, recent advances have revealed that structural chemistry and interfacial reactions critically govern electrochemical performance, degradation behavior, and long-term stability. This mini review will highlight recent progress in understanding crystal water, structural evolution, surface degradation mechanisms, and emerging stabilization strategies. Particular attention will be given to the interplay between bulk structural characteristics and interfacial chemistry, which collectively determines the practical performance of PBA cathodes. By integrating these recent developments, we aim to provide a timely perspective on key challenges and future directions for the practical deployment of PBA cathodes in sodium-ion batteries.

Protective effects of quercetin in experimental ulcerative colitis: Potential involvement of ERK-MMP signaling.

Zhang Qiliang Q, Guo Min M, Wang Yanrong Y, Shen Na N et al.

Ulcerative colitis is a relapsing inflammatory bowel disease driven by dysregulated immunity, epithelial barrier injury and microbial imbalance. Current therapies remain limited by relapse, adverse effects and incomplete response. Quercetin has anti-inflammatory and barrier-protective activities and ERK-MMP signaling may link inflammation to mucosal tissue damage. To evaluate whether the protective effects of quercetin in experimental ulcerative colitis (UC) are associated with modulation of ERK-MMP signaling, while avoiding causal overinterpretation beyond the animal and cellular evidence. A dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mouse model and a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophage inflammatory model were used. Mice were allocated to the control, UC model and low-, medium- and high-dose quercetin groups. Disease activity index (DAI; unitless), colon length, histopathology, inflammatory cytokines and ERK/MMP-related molecules were evaluated by histological staining, ELISA, qRT-PCR and western blotting. In-vitro, quercetin was compared with the ERK phosphorylation inhibitor U0126 and an agonistic stimulus to explore pathway-related associations. The study was exploratory and did not include genetic rescue experiments or human validation. In DSS-treated mice, medium- and high-dose quercetin were associated with improved colon morphology, reduced DAI scores and partial restoration of colon length. Quercetin decreased pro-inflammatory cytokine expression and increased IL-10 expression. In both mouse colon tissues and LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, quercetin was associated with reduced ERK1/2 activation and lower MMP-3 and MMP-9 expression, together with partial recovery of TIMP expression. These molecular changes were directionally consistent with the effects observed after ERK inhibition in-vitro. Quercetin showed protective effects in experimental UC models and these effects may be associated with modulation of the ERK-MMP signaling axis. Further pathway-specific rescue experiments, pharmacokinetic studies and human-relevant models are required before this mechanism can be considered definitive or clinically translatable.

Xanthan Gum/Lignin Double-Interpenetrating Network Cryogels: Preparation, Characterization, and Water Purification Performance.

Lazar Maria Marinela MM, Humelnicu Doina D, Raschip Irina Elena IE, Avram Raluca-Elena RE et al.

The development of multifunctional, bio-based materials capable of simultaneously addressing microbial contamination and inorganic pollutants is of increasing interest for sustainable water purification. In this study, xanthan gum (XG)/lignin(LN) double-interpenetrating network (DN) cryogels were prepared and investigated as porous, multifunctional materials for antimicrobial applications and water purification. The cryogel architecture combines the abundant oxygen-containing functional groups of XG and LN with an interconnected porous network generated under cryogenic conditions. The prepared networks were comprehensively characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), dynamic vapor sorption (DVS), swelling analysis, and uniaxial mechanical testing to evaluate their structural, morphological, physicochemical, and mechanical properties. Their Cu2+ sorption performance was subsequently assessed by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), and the experimental equilibrium data were analyzed using the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips isotherm models. The single-network (SN) XG-based materials exhibited Cu2+ sorption capacities of 62.13-109.81 mg/g, whereas the DN cryogels showed higher capacities of 111.87-120.84 mg/g. The Sips model provided the best description of the equilibrium data, with (R2) values of 0.991-0.994 and substantially lower (χ2) values than the Langmuir and Freundlich models, indicating heterogeneous sorption sites with finite saturation capacity. Importantly, the Cu2+-loaded SN and DNs exhibited sorption efficiency toward sulfate ions, demonstrating their potential for sequential contaminant removal. Sulfate sorption capacities reached 694.53 mg/g for the SN.X2/Cu2+ composite and up to 812.53 mg/g for the DN.XL3/Cu2+ composite. In addition, the prepared materials demonstrated antimicrobial activity against two Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typhimurium) and two Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes) bacterial strains. The results demonstrate that XG/LN DN cryogels combine effective metal-ion and sulfate sorption with antimicrobial activity, providing promising bio-based platforms for water purification and potentially extending the functional lifetime of the material through sequential contaminant removal.
