Focus: Kranzberg's Paradoxes, Education, and Social Movements.

Sousa M Luísa ML, Valentines-Álvarez Jaume J

In our experience teaching the history of technology, Kranzberg's laws have been useful for introducing humanistic perspectives on scientific matters and challenging standard conceptions of technology. Yet this usefulness presents a paradox. While these laws are effective as introductory tools, they are too simple, binary, ethnocentric, and politically conservative to capture the complexities of technology and contemporary historiography. Set against specific case studies, global perspectives, or debates on agency and power, the laws quickly reveal their limitations and their historical situatedness. Taking Kranzberg's call to contextualize technology seriously, this essay contextualizes the laws themselves, reading them as historically situated responses to challenges from within and beyond the history of technology, particularly those posed by social movements, including environmental and antinuclear activism. Four decades after their publication, Kranzberg's laws invite not reverence but critical reassessment, a process that allows us-and our students-to reconsider their pedagogical value through a broader understanding of their historical context.

Focus: When Kranzberg's Laws Traveled.

Choi Hyungsub H

This essay reflects on the afterlife of Melvin Kranzberg's "six laws of technology" and their place in the disciplinary culture of the history of technology. By the early 2000s, the laws had become familiar points of reference within SHOT: rarely treated as a research agenda, yet regularly invoked as a shared language of disciplinary affiliation. Their most famous formulation-that "Technology is neither good nor bad, nor is it neutral"-resonated with a field shaped by efforts to displace technological determinism and to foreground social construction, contingency, and human agency. The subsequent globalization of the history of technology, however, has unsettled the geographical and historiographical assumptions on which that shared language rested. The essay reads them as historically situated formulations that reveal the intellectual and geographical boundaries of the field's formation. Their enduring value lies less in prescribing how technology should be understood than in prompting historically grounded questions about how technologies acquire meaning across interconnected but diverse contexts.

Prescriptive Target Matching Across Hearing Aid Technology Generations: A Real-Ear Insertion Gain Analysis.

Kruger Megan M, Manchaiah Vinaya V, Taddei Steve S, Bailey Abram A et al.

Background: Advances in hearing aid technology may improve prescriptive target matching, but whether newer devices better match targets remains unclear. This study compared prescriptive target matching across hearing aid technology generations. Methods: This secondary analysis included 29 flagship prescription hearing aids grouped into older (2021-2022; n = 8), mid (2023; n = 11), and newest (2024-2025; n = 10) technology generations. Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) between measured Real Ear Insertion Gain (REIG) and NAL-NL2 targets was calculated across six frequencies (500-6300 Hz) for soft (55 dB SPL), conversational (65 dB SPL), and loud (75 dB SPL) speech levels under Initial Fit and Tuned Fit conditions. Kruskal-Wallis tests and linear mixed-effects models accounting for manufacturer clustering were used to evaluate prescriptive target matching across technology generations. Results: No significant technology-generation differences were observed at Initial Fit. Following tuning, group comparisons showed differences at conversational (p = 0.006; ε2 = 0.321) and loud (p = 0.004; ε2 = 0.347) levels, with a directionally consistent but non-significant difference at soft speech (p = 0.055; ε2 = 0.146). After accounting for manufacturer clustering, release year remained a significant predictor of closer target matching only at conversational speech (β = -0.15 dB/year, 95% CI [-0.29, -0.01], p = 0.048). Sensitivity analyses supported the robustness of this finding. Conclusions: Newer hearing aids showed closer prescriptive target matching following tuning at conversational speech, although effects at soft and loud speech did not survive adjustment. Technological advances may improve prescriptive target matching at conversational input levels during fitting.

Focus: The Trap of Neutrality and Kranzberg's Laws.

Hicks Mar M

Kranzberg's laws are a classic approach to the history of technology rooted in specific mores of the mid-twentieth-century United States. This essay updates them for the early twenty-first century, discussing how changes in technological systems, and in the United States itself, have surfaced different concerns and possible new "laws." It argues that the trap of viewing technological systems as though they might be neutral-or at least more flexible than they are-is of primary concern today, not only for scholars of the history of technology but also for technology workers and users.

Focus: Are Kranzberg's Laws Any Good?

Bijker Wiebe E WE

This essay subjects Kranzberg's laws to a critical assessment: They show little sensitivity to the role of women in the history of technology, insufficiently engage scholarship challenging technological determinism, and the idea of formulating laws sits uneasily with humanities research. A second reading reveals a different picture. The essay recovers the laws' heuristic value, particularly their attention to context, and their implications for debates over technological determinism, social constructivism, and the role of history of technology in policymaking. Focusing especially on the first through the fourth laws, the essay asks what remains productive in Kranzberg's formulations when read against subsequent scholarship. The essay concludes that Kranzberg's laws can still serve as a valuable introduction to the history of technology for undergraduate students; for graduate students, they require the critical perspectives offered by the reflective essays in this issue of Technology and Culture as essential additional reading.

Focus: Revisiting Kranzberg's Laws from Africa.

Mchome Emanuel Lukio EL

This reflection reinterprets Kranzberg's second and fifth laws in light of recent developments in the history of technology in Africa. It argues that the field's shift from innovation-centered histories to histories of technology in use, together with growing attention to repair, maintenance, technological failure, and global perspectives, invites a broader understanding of Kranzberg's insights. Rather than rendering the laws obsolete, the essay shows that they continue to provide a productive framework for thinking about histories of technology in Africa and beyond. Read through these methodological and geographical shifts, the laws emerge not as universal formulations to be preserved unchanged but as propositions whose continuing value lies in their capacity for reinterpretation.
