Engineering Smart Hydrogels Through Dynamic Polymer Networks for Controlled Drug Delivery.

Choi Chanju C, Seo Dongseong D, Kim Taeho T, Park Jonghyun J et al.

Smart hydrogels are increasingly explored as adaptive platforms for controlled drug delivery because their polymer networks can respond dynamically to chemical, biological, and physical cues. Among these systems, dynamic polymer networks formed through reversible covalent and noncovalent interactions provide a unique means of coupling molecular-scale bond exchange with time-dependent changes in hydrogel structure, mechanics, degradation, and therapeutic transport. This review presents an integrated framework linking dynamic crosslink chemistry, exchange kinetics, network properties, and drug-release behavior. Dynamic covalent, supramolecular, metal-ligand, and hybrid network strategies are compared with particular emphasis on how crosslink lifetime, mesh accessibility, swelling, viscoelasticity, stress relaxation, and degradation govern therapeutic cargo loading, retention, diffusion, and release. Representative release mechanisms and kinetic models are discussed together with cargo-specific design considerations for small molecules, proteins and peptides, nucleic acids, and nanoparticle-based therapeutics. Biomedical applications are further considered according to therapeutic requirements and administration routes, including injectable local depots, topical and transdermal delivery, and regenerative systems. Finally, key translational challenges involving physiological complexity, biocompatibility, reproducibility, scale-up, sterilization, and storage stability are critically assessed. By connecting molecular interaction dynamics with network-level behavior and therapeutic performance, this review provides design principles for developing more predictable, programmable, and clinically translatable dynamic hydrogel drug-delivery systems.

Conceptual design of Thomson scattering system for detecting electron temperature anisotropy in magnetically confined plasma.

Hoshi Kodai K, Funaba Hisamichi H, Sakai Kentaro K, Uehara Hiyori H et al.

In magnetically confined plasmas, electron temperature anisotropy can be formed as a difference between the electron temperatures parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field. In Compact Helical Device (CHD), a high temporal resolution Thomson scattering system is planned to be installed, which may enable detailed measurements of the temporal evolution of anisotropy. In this study, we designed Thomson scattering system configurations for detecting electron temperature anisotropy in CHD and evaluated the feasibility of anisotropy detection. We found that the single-pass configuration using an additional observation system can detect a temperature difference of 1.4 times between the perpendicular and parallel directions in the core region, although its detection performance deteriorates in the peripheral region. In contrast, the double-pass configuration using an additional counter-propagating laser path can detect a difference of 1.3 times over a wide radial range. These results indicate that the proposed configurations provide a basis for time-resolved measurements of electron temperature anisotropy in CHD.

The peripheral neuromuscular continuum: Histological remodeling induced by physical training.

Neto Walter Krause WK, Gama Eliane Florencio EF

Physical exercise induces structural adaptations that extend far beyond skeletal muscle, affecting virtually every component of the peripheral neuromuscular system. Although remodeling of peripheral nerves and the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) has been increasingly documented, current knowledge remains fragmented because researchers have largely studied these structures in isolation rather than as components of a continuous biological system. This review critically synthesizes evidence on histological, ultrastructural, and cellular adaptations induced by physical exercise throughout the peripheral neuromuscular system. It emphasizes remodeling of peripheral nerve fibers, Schwann cells, the blood-nerve barrier, the extracellular matrix, and the NMJ, as well as the cellular and molecular mechanisms that coordinate these responses. The review also examines how aging affects peripheral nerve and NMJ integrity, discusses current methodological limitations, and proposes an integrative framework that interprets exercise-induced adaptation as coordinated remodeling across the peripheral neuromuscular continuum. Collectively, the available evidence indicates that regular physical exercise preserves structural integrity throughout the neuromuscular system, providing a broader biological basis for its protective effects than skeletal muscle adaptations alone.

The Surgical Anatomy of the Lymphatic System of the Stomach.

Olang Catherine C, Wagura Elizabeth E, Renna Sarah S, Carrasco Mark M et al.

The gastric lymphatic system is essential for immune function and the metastasis of gastric cancer. However, variations in lymphatic anatomy, drainage patterns, and staging frameworks complicate surgical planning and oncologic decision-making. This study aims to review the anatomy of the gastric lymphatic system, the history and variation of JCGC and UICC/AJCC TNM gastric lymphatic staging classifications, while also exploring the differences between lymphadenectomy strategies. A PRISMA-guided search across PubMed, PMC, ScienceDirect, Elsevier Science, Wiley, and SpringerLink retrieved eligible studies meeting pre-determined inclusion criteria. Of the 79 entries returned, 40 eligible studies were identified after application of our inclusion and exclusion criteria. The JCGC and UICC/AJCC TNM systems differ in their staging methods. While the JCGC categorizes lymph nodes by their location relative to the tumor, the UICC/AJCC categorizes the N stage by the number of positive lymph nodes detected. Though the UICC/AJCC staging system is dominant in multiple countries, efforts have been made in recent years to align the protocols in both staging systems. As a result, D2 lymphadenectomy is widely practiced in JCGC adhering countries, whereas UICC/AJCC protocols favor selective dissection combined with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The complexity of gastric lymphatic anatomy and the absence of a globally standardized staging classification can lead to heterogeneous lymphadenectomy strategies and inconsistent oncologic outcomes. This review emphasizes the need for a unified classification system that incorporates anatomical, oncologic, and imaging perspectives to improve staging and optimize surgical decision-making.

Comprehensive Performance Verification of the Mindray MN2880 System in Detecting Respiratory Virus Nucleic Acids.

Chen Jinliang J, Zeng Lianying L, Huang Hao H, Chen Peisong P

To verify the clinical performance of the Mindray MN2880 system for simultaneous detection of SARS-CoV-2, influenza A virus (IAV), influenza B virus (IBV), and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) nucleic acids. According to the CNAS-GL039:2019 and CNAS-GL037:2019 requirements for molecular diagnostic verification, we comprehensively evaluated the Mindray MN2880 multiplex respiratory virus assay across seven critical performance parameters: clinical concordance, limit of detection (LoD), repeatability, precision, cross-reactivity/interference resistance, daily QC, and contamination control. The Mindray MN2880 system demonstrated high diagnostic concordance with the reference method, with total percent agreements of 99.51% (95% CI: 99.00%-99.76%) for SARS-CoV-2, 99.93% (95% CI: 99.60%-99.99%) for IAV, and 100% for both IBV and RSV, and achieved clinically verified limits of detection (LoD: SARS-CoV-2 at 100 copies/mL, IAV/IBV/RSV at 200 copies/mL). Analytical precision was confirmed through 100% detection across negative/low/medium/high concentration panels with ≤ 3% CV for repeatability (Ct values) and ≤ 5% CV for inter-run precision. The assay exhibited 100% specificity against 6 clinically relevant pathogens, including Human Rhinovirus, parainfluenza virus, adenovirus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Staphylococcus aureus, with no observed cross-reactivity. Moreover, the MN2880 system demonstrated robust interference resistance (100% detection of weakly-positive samples spiked with seven interferents), stable daily QC performance (100% valid controls across 115 consecutive runs), and 100% contamination prevention. The MN2880 system satisfies key analytical benchmarks required for diagnostic use in respiratory virus multiplex testing, with performance verified against CNAS-GL039:2019 and CNAS-GL037:2019 standards.

How Common Are Social Determinants of Health? A Comparison of National Estimates and Health System-Reported Prevalence.

Patel Remi R, Prasad Vignesh V, Joshi Maulik M

Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) play a critical role in shaping health outcomes and utilization. Although national surveys demonstrate high prevalence of social needs, many health systems rely on brief clinical screening tools to assess their local SDOH concerns. This study analyzed adult patients who completed an SDOH questionnaire within Meritus Health, a regional integrated health system in Western Maryland, between January and December 2024. Patient-reported prevalence across 6 SDOH domains (food insecurity, loneliness, financial insecurity, health literacy, transportation insecurity, and housing insecurity) was compared with published national prevalence estimates. Reported SDOH prevalence within the health system was consistently lower than national benchmarks, ranging from 3.5% to 7.9%. Assuming that national estimates are more representative of the population, these findings suggest that brief, portal-based clinical screening may underestimate true social need due to screening tool differences, population differences, contextual underreporting, and geographic variation.
