CO2 Capture by Hyperbranched Poly(alkylene imine) Thin Films: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Approach.

Weber Nakamura Guilherme R GR, Chen Junhe J, Kwon Sung Hyun SH, Jang Seung Soon SS

Direct air capture (DAC) of CO2 using solid amine sorbents requires a molecular-level understanding of interfacial phenomena under ultradilute conditions. In this study, we employ density functional theory (DFT)-calibrated force fields and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate CO2 capture behavior in thin films of hyperbranched poly(ethylene imine) (HB-PEI) and poly(propylene imine) (HB-PPI) using explicit slab geometries. The inclusion of a polymer-air interface induces significant structural changes, increasing the fractional free volume (FFV) from 19.1% to 25.0% for HB-PEI and from 19.9% to 29.9% for HB-PPI, along with increases in specific surface area to 0.29 and 0.34 Å-1, respectively. Despite these structural enhancements in HB-PPI, transport analysis reveals that HB-PEI consistently exhibits higher CO2 diffusivity, with diffusion coefficients decreasing from 0.937 × 10-5 to 0.049 × 10-5 cm2/s as CO2 and H2O loading increases, whereas HB-PPI shows lower values, ranging from 0.321 × 10-5 to 0.014 × 10-5 cm2/s. This indicates that CO2 transport is governed by polymer-gas interactions and segmental dynamics rather than free volume alone. Coordination number analysis further shows that HB-PEI exhibits strong CO2 affinity, with primary amine coordination decreasing from 0.655 to 0.464 under hydration, while HB-PPI displays an increase from 0.600 to 0.716, reflecting distinct interaction mechanisms. Additionally, pair correlation analysis reveals preferential CO2 binding to secondary amines in HB-PEI and primary amines in HB-PPI. Hydration introduces a critical limitation by forming hydrogen-bonded networks and competing for amine sites, leading to up to ∼95% reduction in CO2 diffusivity. These results demonstrate that interfacial heterogeneity, amine distribution, and hydration effects collectively govern CO2 capture behavior, underscoring the necessity of incorporating interfacial models for predictive design of DAC materials.

Comparative metabolomic and microbiome characterization of herbal and traditional Baijiu during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion.

Li Jia J, Xiong Xinyi X, Lu Shiguang S, Li Qiang Q et al.

Herbal Baijiu (HB) and traditional Baijiu (TB) contain complex chemical matrices whose metabolic fate during gastrointestinal digestion and subsequent impact on gut microbiota remain unclear. This study systematically compared HB and TB through in vitro gastrointestinal digestion to evaluate the differences in digestive profiles and microbial communities. Volatile metabolite profiling demonstrated that HB maintained higher stability of ester compounds, particularly ethyl pentanoate, throughout digestion, whereas TB accumulated higher levels of potentially undesirable compounds such as 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol during small intestinal digestion. Moreover, non-volatile metabolites analysis revealed clear separation between HB and TB after gastric and small intestinal digestion, while minimal differences were observed during oral digestion. HB exhibited a greater number of differential metabolites during small intestinal digestion than TB, indicating stronger digestion-induced metabolic remodeling. KEGG enrichment analysis indicated that HB was associated with lipid metabolism, bile acid biosynthesis, and one-carbon metabolism pathways, whereas TB predominantly enriched glutathione metabolism and aromatic amino acid metabolism, reflecting stronger oxidative stress responses. During fermentation, HB promoted a more beneficial and functionally diverse microbial profile, characterized by enrichment of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, as well as dynamic succession of Clostridium (63.81% at 24 h) and Veillonella (54.52% at 72 h). Correlation analysis further linked HB-associated metabolites with beneficial microbial genera, whereas TB was associated with Acidaminococcus and Fusobacterium nucleatum. HB and TB exhibited distinct digestion-dependent metabolic and microbial trajectories. HB more effectively modulated digestion-derived metabolites and promoted a more favorable gut microbial profile compared with TB. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

Association Between Haemoglobin Variant Phenotypes and Red Blood Cell Parameters Among Pregnant Women: A Hospital-Based Cross-Sectional Study in Ghana.

Abbam Gabriel G, Nmeterson Bertrand Nii Martey BNM, Appiah Samuel Kwasi SK, Nkansah Charles C et al.

Haemoglobin (Hb) variants arising from mutations in globin chains can alter red blood cell (RBC) parameters. This may complicate the interpretation of pregnancy-related haematological changes, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where both anaemia in pregnancy and Hb variants are highly prevalent. The association between these variants and red cell parameters among Ghanaian pregnant women remains insufficiently characterised. This cross-sectional study investigated the association between Hb variant phenotypes and red cell parameters, and assessed whether such variants were independently associated with anaemia among 400 pregnant women at the Ga West Municipal Hospital, Greater Accra Region, Ghana. Full blood counts and Hb phenotyping by cellulose acetate electrophoresis at pH 8.4 were performed. Multivariable linear and Firth's penalised-likelihood logistic regression models, adjusted for maternal age, body mass index, gestational trimester, parity and haematinic supplementation, were used to estimate associations. Phenotype distribution was HbA 73.2%, HbAS/HbAC 25.3% and HbS/HbC/HbSC 1.5%; anaemia prevalence was 87.5%. Compared with HbA, HbAS/HbAC carriers had lower haematocrit (adjusted β = -1.14%, p = 0.036), mean cell volume (adjusted β = -4.05 fL, p < 0.001), mean cell Hb (adjusted β = -0.89 pg, p = 0.005) and red cell distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD) (adjusted β = -2.79 fL, p < 0.001); HbS/HbC/HbSC reductions were larger for haematocrit (adjusted β = -6.29%, p = 0.005) and mean cell volume (adjusted β = -6.87 fL, p = 0.001). Hb phenotype was not independently associated with anaemia, but the adjusted odds of anaemia in the second trimester were significantly higher than in the first (adjusted odds ratio = 3.45, p = 0.001). Hb variant phenotypes were associated with a microcytic, hypochromic red cell profile, whereas gestational trimester, rather than phenotype, was the dominant correlate of anaemia. Given the single-centre, cross-sectional design and the small number of pregnant women with homozygous or compound heterozygous phenotypes, these findings are hypothesis-generating. They support phenotype- and trimester-aware interpretation of red cell parameters in antenatal care; however, whether such interpretation improves maternal outcomes requires evaluation in larger, multicentre studies.

Real-time Myocardial Oximetry-Preclinical Monitoring Device Validation in a Porcine Beating-Heart Cardiopulmonary Bypass Model.

Haavisto Eetu E, Haapanen Henri H, Petäjä Liisa L, Raivio Peter P et al.

Continuous, real-time monitoring of myocardial oxygenation during cardiac surgery holds potential for enhancing patient safety and improving outcomes. This study evaluated the precision of the near-infrared spectroscopy-based SpectroCor Ltd monitoring device, which measures myocardial hemoglobin/myoglobin (Hb/Mb) oxygen saturation and cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) oxidation ratio. Yorkshire pigs, under general anesthesia, were subjected to cardiopulmonary bypass to generate graded myocardial desaturation. Graded desaturation at aortic root was induced by mixing oxygenated blood from partly pumping cardiopulmonary bypass with deoxygenated blood passing nonventilated lungs. SpectroCor myocardial oximetry was validated against blood samples drawn simultaneously from the aortic root and coronary sinus during various stable saturation intervals. With accuracy of 5.3 percentage points, the SpectroCor device's myocardial Hb/Mb oxygen saturation readings tightly correlated with reference blood samples. Concurrent changes in CcO oxidation ratio closely mirrored Hb/Mb saturation, indicating reliable assessment of mitochondrial function. The SpectroCor monitoring device provides accurate, real-time measurements of myocardial oxygenation, supporting its potential to help optimize cardioprotective strategies during cardiac surgery.

A bivalent oral yeast vaccine displaying Nocardia seriolae FHA and LMBV MCP confers protection in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides).

Lu Jianfei J, Gu Boge B, Yu Pengzhen P, Chen Jiong J

Largemouth bass ranavirus (LMBV) and Nocardia seriolae are major pathogens affecting largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), causing significant economic losses. In this study, recombinant yeasts expressing the fibronectin-binding protein A (FHA) of N. seriolae or the major capsid protein (MCP) of LMBV were constructed using the yeast surface display (YSD) system. Based on these recombinant strains, a bivalent oral yeast-based vaccine was developed and its protective efficacy was systematically evaluated. Oral administration of the vaccine induced specific antibodies against FHA and MCP in serum, as well as increased the transcription levels of adaptive immune genes (IgM, IgT, MHC-II) and innate immune genes (IL-1β, TNF-α, IFN-1, Mx2) in the hindgut, liver, and spleen. Importantly, the bivalent oral vaccine provided significant protection against both pathogens in largemouth bass, with relative percent survival (RPS) values of 56.7% against N. seriolae and 63.3% against LMBV. Meanwhile, the oral vaccine reduced pathogen loads and alleviated histopathological lesions. In summary, these findings suggest that the bivalent oral vaccine developed in this study could serve as a promising strategy for controlling N. seriolae and LMBV infections in largemouth bass aquaculture.
