Microscopic Pollen Image Classification via Contour-Signal Representation, Wavelet Analysis, and CNN.

Accurate classification of pollen grains in microscopic images remains challenging because of noise, structural variability, background complexity, weak texture, and intra-class similarity. To address these issues, this study proposes a hybrid framework that integrates contour-signal modeling, spectral-wavelet analysis, and deep learning for robust microscopic pollen image recognition. In the proposed approach, microscopic pollen images are first converted into contour-based point-signal representations, allowing object boundaries to be analyzed as structured one-dimensional signals. To improve signal quality under real imaging conditions, the framework incorporates Gaussian, median, and contour-aware filtering together with defect-point detection and correction. The processed contour signals are then analyzed using Fourier transform, continuous wavelet transform, and discrete wavelet transform to extract complementary global and local descriptors. These enriched representations are provided to a convolutional neural network for final classification. Experiments conducted on a seven-class microscopic pollen-image dataset demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms conventional computer-vision and baseline deep-learning approaches. The best-performing hybrid configuration achieved an error rate of 6.4%, while the overall classification accuracy reached 0.977 with an F1-score of 0.966, compared with 0.837 for a traditional computer-vision pipeline. These results confirm that combining contour-based signal processing with hierarchical deep feature learning provides an effective and noise-robust strategy for microscopic pollen image recognition. However, the present validation is limited to pollen images, and further experiments on broader microscopic object datasets are required to assess generalization to other micro-object categories such as nanoparticles, fibers, rods, and synthetic microstructures.

Presence, Quantification, and Health Risk Assessment of Mycotoxins in Polyfloral Bee-Collected Pollen from Serbia.

Bee-collected pollen (BCP), due to its valuable nutrient content, is considered a natural food suitable for human consumption. On the other hand, it should be noted that the rich nutritional value of BCP is also relevant in the context of potential contamination with fungal secondary metabolites, such as mycotoxins. In this study, a total of 26 pollen samples were collected from different locations in order to investigate the potential presence of mycotoxins. All BCP samples were obtained from beekeepers who produce pollen for further commercialization. The analyzed mycotoxins included ochratoxin A (OTA), aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), zearalenone (ZEN), T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin, deoxynivalenol (DON), and fumonisins (FUMs), which were measured by direct competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. The obtained results indicated the presence of at least three toxins in all samples. AFB1, OTA, and ZEN were detected above the limit of quantification (LOQ) in all samples, whereas T-2 and HT-2 were below the LOQ in five samples and DON in four samples. FUMs were below LOQ in all samples. Due to the significant content of AFB1 determined in all samples, there is a potential risk for future consumers, demanding constant monitoring as well as improvement of BCP production.

Synergistic Effects of Marine Fish and Insect-Derived Proteins on Honey Bee (Apis mellifera L.) Health, Longevity, and Gut Microbiota.

Pollen limitation compromises honey bee health and pollination services, and existing pollen substitutes are typically formulated around crude protein content while lacking the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids naturally present in pollen and bee-collected re-sources. To address both protein and fatty acid gaps in current substitutes, this study evaluated marine-protein and insect-larvae-based diets. We assessed how formulations using Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) and insect larvae affect the nutrition, physiology, longevity, and gut microbiota of Apis mellifera L. Newly emerged bees were fed for 35 days on: sugar syrup (negative control), sugar syrup and natural pollen (positive control), or four experimental diets: seabass-based (SB), or SB supplemented with meal-worm (SBM), or wax moth (SBW), or black soldier fly (SBB). Experimental diets (12.48-15.59% crude protein, vs. 17.24% in natural pollen) while SB supplied eicosapentaenoic acid (39.3-53.3 mg/100 g) and docosahexaenoic acid (37.2-52.3 mg/100 g), and SBB was additionally rich in lauric acid (604.3 mg/100 g). SBB- and SBM-fed bees exhibited the greatest hypopharyngeal gland development (0.123 mm and 0.115 mm, respectively, vs. 0.060 mm in sugar-only controls), with no significant difference from SB alone. All SB-based diets supported significantly greater survival than the sugar-only control (log-rank p < 0.0001) and did not differ significantly from the natural pollen treatment with SBB showing the highest and most consistent day-35 survival (81.1%). All sea-bass-based diets significantly altered the gut microbial community structure, promoting short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-associated bacteria such as Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Blautia wexlerae. This enrichment may reflect not only the omega-3 and lauric acid content of the diets but also the presence of substrates that can be utilized by gut microbes, which may exert prebiotic-like effects by favoring SCFA-producing bacteria. These results demonstrate that marine and insect-derived nutrients can supply protein while also providing beneficial lipids and microbially utilizable substrates that promote the enrichment of beneficial SCFA-associated bacteria not typically dominant in the honey bee gut. These enriched diets, particularly SBB, are promising candidates war-ranting further evaluation at the colony and field levels.

Untangling the Roots of HPV Vaccine Acceptance in West Virginia: How Hesitancy and Misinformation Shape Parental Decisions.

West Virginia is of particular concern regarding HPV vaccine hesitancy, currently ranking 45th among U.S. states in HPV vaccine uptake. General vaccine hesitancy and HPV- and HPV vaccine-specific misinformation, both associated with lower vaccination, have increased in recent years, complicating efforts to identify key drivers of HPV vaccine acceptance and effective intervention targets. This study used a Qualtrics survey of n = 330 parents of children aged 0-14 in West Virginia. Measures included parental HPV vaccine acceptance for their youngest child (reflecting either completed vaccination or intention to vaccinate), general vaccine hesitancy measured using the Vaccine Hesitancy Scale (VHS), and endorsement of nine common HPV- and HPV vaccine-specific misinformation statements. Misinformation items were summed and demonstrated good internal reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.868). Hierarchical logistic regression analyses indicated significant racial/ethnic differences across all model steps, with non-White parents less likely to report HPV vaccine acceptance for their child (p < 0.001). In Step 2, lower levels of general vaccine hesitancy predicted higher HPV vaccine acceptance (p < 0.001). In the final model, higher endorsement of HPV- and HPV vaccine-specific misinformation was associated with lower HPV vaccine acceptance (p = 0.035). These findings underscore the independent and additive influence of general vaccine hesitancy and HPV- and HPV vaccine-specific misinformation on parental HPV vaccine acceptance in West Virginia. Community-engaged public health strategies should prioritize strengthening vaccine confidence and directly addressing HPV- and HPV vaccine-specific misinformation, particularly among underserved populations.

Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Intent and Associated Factors Among the Unvaccinated University Freshmen in the Largest University Town in China.

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has been proven a safe, necessary, and effective measure against HPV infection. However, HPV vaccine uptake remains limited among university students in China. This study investigated HPV vaccine intent among university freshmen in the largest university town in China. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among unvaccinated female and male freshmen attending seven universities in Songjiang University Town, Shanghai, during 2024-2025. The questionnaire collected sociodemographic characteristics, HPV and HPV-vaccine-related knowledge, awareness, and vaccine intent. Factors associated with HPV vaccine intent were determined. Results: A total of 3397 valid questionnaires were collected, including female (60.02%) and male (39.98%) university freshmen. Overall, 76.12% were aware of HPV, 80.98% were aware of the HPV vaccine, and 84.31% expressed vaccine intent, with significantly higher rates among females than males (each p < 0.001). Socioeconomics, knowledge, awareness, sexual behavior, and HPV testing history were significantly associated with vaccine intent (each p < 0.05). The most common reason for no intent was perceived low risk of HPV-related diseases (40.53%). The most expected improvement measures were regulatory confirmation of vaccine safety and effectiveness (37.71%) and healthcare professionals' recommendations (37.71%), with no gender difference (each p > 0.05). Notably, 4.00% refused HPV vaccination, regardless of improvement measures. Additionally, most respondents preferred financial supporting policies, regardless of gender or vaccine intent (each p > 0.05). Conclusions: University freshmen showed the disparity between high awareness/intent and low knowledge. Financial considerations may influence HPV vaccination decisions. Thus, improving knowledge, particularly among males, and providing financial support may enhance HPV vaccine intent.

[Research progress in combination vaccines containing sabin strain inactivated poliovirus vaccine].

Sabin strain inactivated poliovirus vaccine (sIPV), derived from attenuated Sabin poliovirus strains, has emerged as a promising alternative to both oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) and conventional inactivated poliovirus vaccine (cIPV). It eliminates the risk of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) and the emergence of vaccine-derived polioviruses (VDPVs). In addition, sIPV demonstrates superior biosafety and vaccine safety during production and administration compared with cIPV. The integration of sIPV into combination vaccines with other routine immunization antigens can reduce the number of injections and streamline immunization schedules, making sIPV-containing combination vaccines a key focus of recent research. Japan launched the world's first sIPV-containing tetravalent vaccine in 2012, followed by the introduction of an sIPV-containing pentavalent vaccine in 2024. In China, a standalone sIPV was licensed in 2015, and multiple sIPV-containing combination vaccines are currently in clinical trials or preclinical development. The primary challenges for these vaccines include antigen compatibility within combination formulations and the scalability of sIPV production. Future strategies, such as the use of innovative adjuvants and intradermal administration, may enable antigen-sparing approaches. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the development and application of sIPV-containing combination vaccines, aiming to inform and guide ongoing vaccine research and development in China.
