Self-reported physical activity in a randomized study from Norwegian Healthy Life Centres.

This study examines firstly if participation in a three-month intervention at Norwegian Healthy Life Centres (HLCs) improved self-reported physical activity (SR-PA), and secondly to what extent physical activity (PA) status at six months and changes from baseline were associated with demographic and motivational predictors. Regular PA is promoted as a central component of public health initiatives aimed at preventing noncommunicable diseases. This randomized controlled trial included 118 participants (57 in the intervention group) recruited from HLCs in South-western Norway. The intervention effect was assessed by comparing the intervention group with the waiting-list control group after six months. We examined sociodemographic and motivational predictors of change combining both groups into a single cohort. This trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (ID: NCT02247219). At six-month follow-up, participants in the intervention group reported higher levels of SR-PA compared with the control group. The estimated effect was modest (B = 0.26, 95% CI -0.01 to 0.53), equivalent to ≈0.37 SD. Although the confidence interval included zero, the estimate remained compatible with a modest positive effect. Autonomous motivation and social support were positively associated with SR-PA after 6 months, while psychological defiance showed a negative association. Autonomous motivation and psychological defiance impacted PA change during the 6-month period in opposite directions.

Structural and Molecular Evidence for a Frequency-Dependent Electrochemical Gradient in the Human Cochlear Lateral Wall.

The stria vascularis (SV) is a tripartite epithelium lining the lateral wall (LW) of the human cochlea, generating a positive endocochlear potential (EP) essential for auditory sensory transduction. There remains limited information about its variable structure and organization along the cochlear spiral or whether an electrochemical gradient exists. Here, we used three-dimensional (3D) synchrotron radiation phase-contrast imaging (SR-PCI) and light and transmission electron microscopy (LM and TEM) to examine the human SV and spiral ligament (SL) at different frequency locations based on the SR-PCI. Results were compared with recent molecular analyses performed in our laboratory. Volumetric and microanatomic analyses of the LW and SV, including critical K+ recycling pathways were made at different frequency locations on matched cochlear frequency maps based on Greenwood's formula. TEM analyses were correlated with previous results obtained on the expression of ion transporter and channels including the multiplex RNAscope® technique. The LW diminished in volume a 100-fold and the SV 14-fold in the cochlear apical turn. Ultrastructural analyses showed reduced cellularity in the SV and SL. Moreover, the organization and architecture of the SV cell and vascular pattern modified along the cochlear spiral. Claudius cell outline, TEM, and prior results of Na/K-ATPase activity and GJB2 gene transcript distribution suggest there is a reduced K+ recycling potential and water flux in the LW of the apical cochlea. Macro-, micro-, and recent molecular anatomical studies suggest that the human cochlear "battery" may be less potent in the apex. This could indicate that sensory transduction at low frequencies may be partially power-driven by more basal regions. Frequency-dependent variations in electrochemistry may have pathophysiological significance in connection with metabolic hearing loss and surgical treatments such as cochlear implantation.

Efficacy and Safety of Laser Acupuncture in the Treatment of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Preliminary evidence suggests acupuncture may be helpful for pediatric autism; however, needles may be a source of healthcare trauma, so non-needle options should be prioritized. To conduct a systematic review (SR) to synthesize the current evidence on the efficacy and safety of laser acupuncture for pediatric autism. We searched the following databases from inception until Nov 14, 2024: MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, Scopus, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, SinoMed and China National Knowledge Infrastructure and J-Stage. Randomised controlled trials of laser acupuncture on children up to age 18 years of age with ASD were included. Outcomes were autism symptoms, adverse effects and language development indicators. The PRISMA-A checklist was used to guide conduct and reporting. A total of two trials (n=76) were included. The quality of evidence for most indicators were considered low to very low by GRADE criteria. Meta-analysis was not possible due to heterogeneity in populations and outcomes. Results suggest acupuncture groups benefited compared to no treatment. There were no adverse effects reported by parents of the participants in either trial. Two studies indicate benefits of laser acupuncture in children with autism but given the low quality of evidence, results should be regarded with caution. Additional well conducted randomized controlled trials with larger sample sizes are required to build evidence. Enrichment of rhenium, uranium and tantalum in jurassic coal from yili basin, xinjiang - evidence from mineralogy and geochemistry.

In this study, detailed geochemical and mineralogical investigations were conducted on the No.12 coal from the Early-Middle Jurassic in the Yili Basin. The results indicate the following: (a) The No.12 coal from the southern Yili Basin exhibits super-elevated enrichment (100 < concentration coefficient, CC) of Re(394.02ng/g), U(285.99 µg/g), and Ta(120.51 µg/g); high enrichment (10 < CC < 100) of Mo(29.11 µg/g), Se(28.51 µg/g) and Hf(12.54 µg/g); enrichment (5 < CC < 10) of Zn (7.86 µg/g)and Be (7.62 µg/g); slight enrichment (2 < CC < 5) of Cs (4.78 µg/g), Rb (4.75 µg/g), V (4.64 µg/g), Cr (4.51 µg/g), Co (4.01 µg/g), Ni (3.67 µg/g), W (3.65 µg/g), Pb (3.35 µg/g), Ge (2.96 µg/g), Cd (2.96 µg/g), F (2.70 µg/g), Cu(2.64 µg/g) Tl(2.53 µg/g), In(2.46 µg/g), Ga(2.41 µg/g), Sb(2.32 µg/g), Zr(2.31 µg/g), Sc(2.28 µg/g), and Th(2.18 µg/g); normal abundance (0.5 < CC < 2) of As(1.93 µg/g), Nb(1.75 µg/g), Li(1.42 µg/g), Hg(1.30 µg/g), Ba(1.12 µg/g), Sr(0.84 µg/g), and B(0.67 µg/g); and depletion(CC < 0.5) of Bi (0.40 µg/g). Excluding volatilization during combustion, U, Re, and Ta in the coal ash have certain resource potential to some extent. (b) The most common minerals in the No.12 coal are quartz, kaolinite, and pyrite. Additionally, some uncommon minerals, such as rutile, monazite, barite, clausthalite, ferroselite, pyrrhotite, coffinite, uraninite, sphalerite, and Fe-sulfate, were identified in the coal with super-elevated U content (especially when the U content exceeds 1000 µg/g). Among these minerals, clausthalite, ferroselite, and uraninite can control the enrichment of inorganic U and Se. (c) The enrichment of U-Re-Se-Mo-Ta-Hf in the No.12 coal is probably attributed to the infiltration of U-bearing oxidized solutions and the input of detritus containing critical metal elements from the sedimentary provenance.

Melatonin Inhibits Metastasis of Sunitinib-Resistant Renal Cell Carcinoma Cells Via the GRP78/p38/CTSD Expression.

Sunitinib resistance contributes to poor outcomes in advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC). This study investigated the anti-metastatic effects and underlying mechanisms of melatonin in sunitinib-resistant (SR)-RCC. Melatonin significantly inhibited the migration and invasion of A498-SR and Caki-1-SR cells. SR-RCC cells exhibited elevated CTSD expression, impaired endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress signaling with reduced GRP78 and IRE1α, and enhanced p38 MAPK activation, all of which were reversed by melatonin. Silencing p38 MAPK further potentiated the inhibitory effects of melatonin on cell migration and invasion. Mechanistically, CTSD expression was regulated through both GRP78/p38 MAPK-mediated ER stress. In vivo, melatonin markedly reduced lung metastasis of Caki-1-SR cells without causing significant toxicity to major organs. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that melatonin inhibited the metastatic potential of SR-RCC by decreasing CTSD expression, restoring ER stress response, and decreasing p38 MAPK expression, supporting its potential as an anti-metastatic therapeutic agent for SR-RCC.

Tunable A-site crystal-field modulation enables ultra-sensitive, multi-channel lanthanide thermometry in low-phonon halide lattices.

The development of high-performance lanthanide-based fluorescence-intensity-ratio (FIR) thermometers is limited by the lack of a continuously tunable, qualitative guided crystal-field design principle. Most systems still rely on empirical host-dopant screening, and the correlation among lattice geometry, crystal-field strength, energy gap (ΔE), and thermometric sensitivity (Sr) remains unclear. Here, we establish an A-site lattice-site engineering strategy in APb2Cl5 (A = Na, K, Rb, Cs and solid solutions), where the A-site ionic radius acts as a single tunable parameter to regulate local geometry, crystal-field strength, and ΔE. Mapping from Na+ to Cs+ identifies an optimal K-Rb-Cs regime enabling linear tuning of ΔE and Sr, while excessive lattice contraction near the Na boundary suppresses luminescence and disrupts thermal coupling, revealing that ΔE enhances Sr only within a finite, lattice-defined window. Owing to the ultra-low phonon energy of the Pb-Cl lattice, Er3+/Yb3+-doped KPb2Cl5 nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit strong upconversion (UC), including the 490 nm 4F7/2 band, and achieve record Sr values of 33.6% K-1 at 78 K and 2.3% K-1 at 298 K, enabling cross-validated thermometry from 78-418 K. Extending this framework to Nd3+ enables 808 nm excitation and visible/near infrared (NIR) dual-mode thermometry with Sr up to 21.7% K-1. This work establishes a general route for high-performance optical nanothermometers.
